Hello Friends:
You've heard about trauma but have you heard about Post-Traumatic Growth?
Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is a concept developed by by Richard Tedeschi, PhD, and Lawrence Calhoun, PhD, in 1996 after they discovered that people who have experienced traumatic events are more likely to report positive change in themselves. While trauma can often lead to negative outcomes like depression, anxiety, or PTSD, PTG focuses on the idea that some people can emerge from adversity stronger, more resilient, and with a deeper sense of meaning in life.
Common areas where PTG can manifest include:
Increased personal strength: People may feel more capable of handling future challenges.
Improved relationships: Trauma can sometimes make individuals more empathetic, and they may develop deeper connections with others.
A greater appreciation for life: Survivors might develop a stronger sense of gratitude and focus on what really matters.
New possibilities in life: The trauma might inspire individuals to pursue new goals, careers, or life paths.
Spiritual or existential growth: Some people develop a deeper sense of spirituality or understanding of life’s larger meaning after experiencing trauma.
PTG doesn’t mean that trauma is easy to endure or that it’s always inevitable that someone will grow from it, but it highlights the potential for positive change in the wake of suffering.
Here at Sault Haus, we offer so many opportunities that can help facilitate post-traumatic growth (PTG) by promoting healing, self-awareness, and resilience after trauma:
